Settling the High Plains

Born and raised on her father’s farm in Aurelius, Washington, Ohio, Mary Jane Wolford marries Jacob Wooster a couple of years after her brother John is killed at the Battle of Shiloh.  After the war, railroads began to cross the country, and wherever major railroads intersected, fast growing communities sprang up.  Hastings, Nebraska must have called to Jacob and Mary, because we find that they have moved there shortly after 1870, at the height of the boom times for Hastings.  Their last of three daughters, Nellie, was born in Nebraska in 1874.

When they arrived, they most likely had to build a house out of sod and learn how to adapt to the extreme summer and winter temperatures. Jacob worked as a blacksmith, and they seem to have found a place they could call home.  After 54 years of marriage, they died just a few days apart in May 1918 in Hastings.
